Sealants For Children

Sealants For Children

Sealants help prevent decay by protecting the surface of the teeth, especially the back teeth where brushing can be more difficult for children. They are made of a clear, liquid resin that hardens when a special light is shined on it. This creates a smooth, hard surface that prevents food from settling in the grooves of your child’s back teeth.

Research has shown that sealants can reduce a child’s risk of decay in treated teeth by up to 80%. The CDC has even weighed in, stating that children without dental sealants may be 3 times more likely to develop decay in the same teeth than children with sealants.

HOW ARE SEALANTS PLACED?

First, the tooth or teeth are washed, dried, and isolated with either cotton rolls or a rubber dam. Then the teeth are etched with a special gel that roughens the teeth, so the sealant material has a rough surface to adhere to. Once that is rinsed off, the sealant material is flowed into the grooves of the teeth and light cured. When all the teeth have been treated, the dentist checks for rough edges and makes sure floss can pass between the teeth.

Generally speaking, there are no side effects with dental sealants unless your child is allergic to one of the ingredients in the resin material, which is extremely rare.

CARING FOR YOUR CHILD’S SEALANTS

Sealants are sturdy and should last up to 10 years, but may need replacing sooner, depending on your child’s lifestyle. Avoiding chewing on ice and hard candy can prolong their life and prevent chipping which might allow decay to sneak in and rot the tooth from the inside. The dentist will monitor your child’s sealants at each visit to make sure they are still intact.

While sealants don’t eliminate the need for proper homecare such as flossing and brushing twice daily, they can offer some protection and can even stop minor decay from developing further.

Jupiter Kids is a one of a kind pediatric dental office. Dr.Taiym has seen my kids for years. Very professional, welcoming, and knowledgable.  Dr.Kamali is a sweetheart and you can tell she cares about her patients. Best place in the Dallas area if you are looking for a place for your kids.

Today was our first visit and I am so impressed. At our previous dentist office I felt like a number, moving through the system. Even though we had been there for years, they still call my son by his legal name which, he does not go by. When we walked in the door at Jupiter, the receptionist said “you must be____” and immediately called him by the name he goes by. We were given a quick tour of the office and I was even able to meet with Dr. Kamali, before we even began, in order to express any concerns or questions I may have. Meanwhile my son met and was Xrayed by Megan, the incredible dental hygienist. She took the time to explain everything to him before she did it, which helped with his nervous energy for sure. Overall, such a great experience. I couldn’t recommend this dental practice enough to other parents looking for an overall experience.

Beware of the suggested myobraces they promote. The device used after braces was a nightmare. Now we have to get braces again which means we have to pay AGAIN. Also, when my kiddo had to have a tooth pulled, they didn't give him the correct amount of anesthetic and he screamed and cried while the tooth was pulled. I nearly fainted. I felt like such a horrible parent for allowing this to occur. I had no clue that the dr. would continue a procedure even when a person was screaming. We both suffered trauma from this. We don't go there anymore. I really liked Dr. Elizabeth Kamali, but Dr. Sal Taiym seemed to be less professional and didn't listen to us. My comment is our family's experience. I hope that, if you choose to go here, you have a better story to tell. Every dr. treats each patient differently. Apparently, we had stupid written on our faces and cha-ching in our wallets. Very disappointed.

We found Jupiter Kids Dentistry after moving to Allen from Houston, and we couldn’t be happier. They are so caring and make sure the kids feel comfortable. We’ve seen them for emergency visits and routine check-ups, I won’t take our kids anywhere else.
